Senior Naval Architect/Marine Engineer

Bruce S. Rosenblatt & Associates, LLC (BSR) is seeking an experienced Senior Naval Architect/Marine Engineer to join its growing engineering team in the Newport News, VA office. BSR seeks an engineering professional with strong technical skills and the ability to perform comprehensive engineering calculations while supporting and supervising younger engineers.

Bruce S. Rosenblatt & Associates, LLC (BSR) is a third generation Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering firm, essentially a re-birth of the original company, M. Rosenblatt & Son, Inc. (MR&S) which was established in 1947 and was one of the largest, full service naval architectural and marine engineering firms in the United States.

For the last eighteen years, with offices located on the East and West coasts, BSR has provided design and engineering support to commercial shipyards, ship owners and operators, the Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Navy (USN), the Military Sealift Command (MSC), the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), state and city governments, and foreign countries. The professional staff (currently 38 and growing) includes licensed Professional Engineers (PE), graduates in various engineering disciplines, experienced marine designers, and CAD drafters.

What

You Will Do / Responsibilities
  • Complete engineering tasks assigned by project managers and other leadership personnel accurately and efficiently. Tasks span the full range of design stages including feasibility studies, concept design, functional design, and detail design.
  • Disciplines could include:
    • Hydrostatics & stability (weight estimates, intact/damage stability assessments, etc.)
    • Arrangements (general arrangements, compartment outfitting, aviation integration, topside integration)
    • Overall ship design integration
    • Requirements development
    • Executing naval architecture analyses
    • Fluid systems engineering
    • Lifting, rigging, and transportation engineering
    • Engineering and design of ship structures ranging from local equipment foundations to development of global vessel scantling plans.
    • Docking calculations and development of docking plans
  • Mentor staff in devising approaches to solving problems and challenges.
  • Develop accurate and detailed engineering calculations using first principles hand calculations or other methods as appropriate, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria for design and modification of ships and other vessels – both commercial and government.
  • Design repairs and upgrades to existing equipment and systems, taking into account constructability and capabilities of individual clients.
  • Perform dead weight surveys and inclining experiments during vessel construction and/or repair availabilities. Lead effort to incline vessels as required by regulatory bodies; create plans for weights required, angle of heel measurements, freeboard measurements; use GHS program or vessel hydrostatic data to establish vessel CG, GM, and displacement.
  • Create drawings in AutoCAD such as general arrangements, lines plan, structures, hull scantling plans, tonnage, machinery arrangements, egress, structural fire protection, side profiles, inclining weight layouts, docking plans, and fluid system diagrams.
  • Provide support for various assessments, inspections, and technical assistance as tasked, to include vessel visits and preparation of sketches onsite.
  • Review drawings for completeness and conformance to industry and company standards.
  • Prepare and present technical reports and engineering documentation to peers, supervisors, clients, and regulatory bodies.
  • Interface with existing and potential clients regularly to convey technical information clearly and accurately.
