Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.
Job SummaryThe SSN(X) Platform Mechanical team is seeking highly skilled and experienced engineers and leaders to join our diverse, dynamic and dedicated team. As a member you’ll have the once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape critical functions and novel capabilities for the Navy’s next generation fast attack submarine. The mechanical team is responsible for the concept design, development, and execution of complex mechanical systems across non‑propulsion areas of the submarine, including payload launch and recovery, control surfaces, HVAC, chill water, masts, and many others.
You will team with the Navy and industry to develop these systems and shape the world’s most advanced and capable submarine.
- Provide technical leadership and oversight to a team developing submarine mechanical systems
- Guide the development of innovative new designs and provide mentorship to the team
- Coordinate with Navy counterparts and conduct periodic briefs to the Navy and working groups
- Oversee the work of supporting team members and review technical products
- Travel periodically to naval bases/facilities, vendors, conferences, or other NNS facilities
- Strong technical background with comprehensive knowledge of the engineering and design process related to mechanical systems from concept through ship integration
- Team facilitator and innovator, helping to inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to support the development and presentation of technical reports and briefs to NNS leadership or the Navy, and to coordinate with vendors and industry partners
- Bachelor’s Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience
- Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience
- Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
- Knowledge of submarine mechanical systems and how they interface with structural, electrical, and other mechanical systems
- Understanding of an array of mechanical products, such as hydraulic and electric actuators, linkages/cam‑sliders, pumps and valves, HVAC systems, structural weldments, welded or fastened joints, and others
- Experience in traditional and computer-based methodologies for the design and analysis of components
- Ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture within a diverse set of team members and stakeholders
- Openness to continuous learning and development in a dynamic environment
- Operational experience on commissioned or under construction Navy vessels is a plus
