The Role
Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.
The Future Submarine Platform Mechanical team is seeking highly skilled and experienced engineers and leaders to join our diverse, dynamic and dedicated team of engineers working across multiple submarine design programs. As a member of our team you'll have the once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape critical functions and novel capabilities for the next generation of fast attack submarines.
The Future Submarine program supports both SSN(X) and AUKUS attack submarine programs as well as special projects in the Undersea Warfare program. The mechanical team is responsible for the concept design, development, and execution of complex mechanical systems across the non-propulsion areas of the submarines, including payload launch and recovery, control surfaces, HVAC, chill water, masts, and many others. You will team with the customer, vendors, and industry to develop these systems, molding what will become the world's most advanced and capable submarines.
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide technical leadership and oversight to a team developing submarine mechanical systems
- Guide the development of innovative new designs and provide technical leadership and mentorship to the team
- Coordinate with customer counterparts and conduct periodic briefs to the customer and working groups
- Oversee the work of supporting team members and review technical products
- Travel periodically to naval bases/facilities, vendors, conferences, or other NNS facilities
Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Requirements:
- Strong technical background with a comprehensive knowledge of the engineering and design process related to mechanical systems from the concept stage through ship integration
- Team facilitator and innovator, helping to inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to support the development and presentation of technical reports and briefs to NNS leadership or the customer, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners
- Knowledge of submarine mechanical systems and how they interface with structural, electrical, and other mechanical systems
- An understanding of an array of mechanical products, such as hydraulic and electric actuators, linkages/cam-sliders, pumps and valves, HVAC systems, structural weldments, welded or fastened joints, and others
- Experience in traditional and computer-based methodologies for the design and analysis of components
- The ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture within a diverse set of team members and stakeholders
- Exhibit an openness to continuous learning and development in a dynamic environment
- Operational experience on commissioned or under construction Navy vessels is a plus
