Salary: $139,400 - $220,300 (SSE) What Your Job Will Be Like

The Radio Frequency (RF) group leader provides management, supervision, and technical oversight for a team of engineers and technicians supporting CEBAF accelerator operations, and other lab initiatives. Responsible for the supervision and the safety of the RF group personnel. Work with customers to develop planning, cost, and schedules to maintain reliable RF systems to support accelerator operations, address obsolescence issues, and lead state-of-the-art High Power RF (HPRF) and Low Level RF (LLRF) controls development.

Ensure that the RF staff is up to date in safety training and following EHS policy, especially as it applies to hazardous energy control. Ensures the RF group follows and uses work‑planning tools (ePAS, ATlist, MSD) for all relevant tasks.

In This Job You Will
  • Work with Accelerator Operations and Accelerator Engineering Systems management to develop strategies that address RF performance improvement and obsolescence needs for the CEBAF accelerator, experimental halls, and other lab initiatives.
  • Lead the development of new RF equipment/systems that resolve obsolescence issues and provide new or enhanced RF capabilities to accelerator physicists.
  • Maintain an understanding of the RF system operation requirements for CEBAF operations. Analyze accelerator downtime weekly and work with accelerator operability to increase machine availability and reliability.
  • Ensure projects are developed with relevant stakeholder involvement, reviewed at appropriate stages, and documented upon completion. Maintain RF equipment over its life cycle.
  • Ensure the RF group follows all ES&H electrical safety requirements, maintains all training. Direct the RF group to use the accepted work‑planning tools for all relevant tasks and jobs.
  • Assist in the coordination of off‑hour accelerator emergency repairs to support 24‑hour a day operation of the accelerator.
  • Stay abreast of RF and accelerator technological advancements and support R&D initiatives of Jefferson Lab.
  • Develop strategies to address yearly RF system problems, repairs, maintenance, and other issues related to system performance. Ensure RF system spares are on hand in a timely manner.
Lead – Supervisory – Management
  • The RF group leader is responsible for the management, supervision, technical oversight, and safety for RF staff supporting CEBAF operations and other lab initiatives. Carries out the day‑to‑day operations of the RF group.
  • Manages the group annual work plan and budget. Ensure resources are properly assigned to maintain machine operations within budget. Recognize and communicate resource issues during the group’s planning process.
Experience
  • Required:

    15 or more years of relevant experience with electrical engineering systems.
  • Required:

    5 or more years of experience with projects exceeding $500,000.
  • Required:

    5 or more years of experience supervising technical (engineering and technician) staff.
  • Preferred:
    Experience with project management tools.
Education
  • Required:

    Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Preferred:
    Master’s degree in electrical engineering.
Experience And Education Exchange

Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Background in electrical engineering, especially in a scientific or technical environment.
  • Expert in accelerator RF applications (RF power and/or Low Level RF controls) and/or HV power supplies/power conversion.
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits and systems.
  • System expertise in one of the following areas: RF/Microwave electronics, RF power systems, Low Level RF (control theory, digital design) or analog/power electronics.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical engineering groups and projects.
  • Understanding of electrical safety and lock‑out/tag‑out procedures and protocols.
