The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

This Mechanical System/Process Engineer position will be providing technical oversight for shipbuilding manufacturing equipment and processes. They will be part of the Digital Plant team focused on improving equipment reliability and availability. Additionally, they will be tasked with understanding manufacturing production process and driving improvements with the goal of increasing overall shop throughput. This candidate will be involved in developing digital tools to support the manufacturing process and associated equipment.

The Mechanical System/Process Engineer will need to develop a cohesive working relationship with manufacturing operators and maintenance personnel. The candidate should have extensive knowledge of mechanical conveyance systems, large scale welding and burning equipment, robotic systems, metal plate bending and forming equipment and/or lathes and CNC machines.

The candidate's day-to-day responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned equipment and system(s)
  • Provide engineering resolutions for system problems/configuration changes
  • Produce and/or oversee the development of technical documentation that govern the equipment design, configuration, and operation.
  • Develop a long range strategic plan for improvements to assigned equipment and system(s)
  • Initiate and support the development/execution of planned maintenance requirements
  • Lead the resolution of unplanned events
  • Develop and maintain critical equipment/system metrics (Uptime/Downtime, Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF),performance to design, PM Compliance, OEE, etc.)
  • Participate in project design and implementation process for equipment/system related projects
  • Oversee project/system testing to ensure system meets technical requirements and operates at peak performance

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
