The Role This requisition is for an Engineer Mechanical 3 in the Propulsion and Reactor Engineering Planning Yard (PREPY) and Standard Navy Valve Yard (SNVY). This engineer will be part of a group that provides engineering, logistical and vendor support for standard Navy Valves and vendor proprietary-design valves that are used in nuclear propulsion plants of aircraft carriers and submarines. Responsibilities include developing design, operating, and maintenance improvements for nuclear valves, identifying and qualifying new-design valves for obsolete or no-longer-procurable designs, providing resolutions for in-service valve problems, conducting laboratory testing, implementing life-cycle cost reductions, and developing recommendations to the customers.

Major functions include:
* Maintain Standard Navy valve drawings and their related technical manuals
* Provide engineering analyses and design studies on a diverse range of issues
* Provide Fleet, Shipyard and Navy Supply System support
* Provide logistical support, including preparing technical ordering documentation
* Support the commercial vendor base Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. Must Have Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience. Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program. Nice to Have
* The individual should have general knowledge of the design, operation, and /or testing of power plant systems and components, and must be able to apply engineering principles, theory, technology, and tools to analyze and resolve engineering problems of moderate complexity in new and existing mechanical component designs.
* The specific position is in the area of valve engineering, where the individual will be responsible for standard Navy valve designs and/or vendor proprietary valve designs used in Naval nuclear plants. Familiarity with manufacturing processes (may include additive manufacturing), machine design, and materials science as well as military and/or commercial specifications including welding, nondestructive-testing, and materials is desired.
* Experience in project management to manage multiple projects simultaneously, including prioritizing, planning, scheduling, tracking and reviewing the work of engineers while maintaining quality, schedule and budget.
* Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills to proactively and effectively communicate with team members, NAVSEA 08, Naval Shipyards, Planning Yards, and manufacturers.
* Strong written communication skills, with attention to detail, to consistently present high quality problem solutions as submittals to customers.
* Ability to self-initiate assignments, able to lead teams as well as individuals, and demonstrate technical rigor in all work products.
* Experience in implementing innovative technology to improve a design or process.
