Meet HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding
With more than 25,000 employees – including third-, fourth- and even fifth-generation shipbuilders – HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia. We’re the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Our diverse and innovative team of professionals ranges from skilled trades to project managers, engineers and software developers to solution architects, technical subject matter experts, and system users.

We collaborate together at the forefront of technology, manufacturing, and integration of the most powerful and survivable naval ships in the world.

The Role

Oversees and manages the operational aspects of ongoing projects and serves as liaison between project management and planning, project team, and line management. Reviews status of projects and budgets; manages schedules and prepares status reports. Assesses project issues and develops resolutions to meet productivity, quality, and client-satisfaction goals and objectives. Develops mechanisms for monitoring project progress and for intervention and problem solving with project managers, line managers, and clients.

Position responsibilities include centrally tracking Ship Alterations (SHIPALTS) and Alteration & Improvements (A&I) at the group‑level man‑hour detail. Reporting to the Technical Products Manager at the Newport News Shipbuilding Submarine Planning Yard, the analyst will maintain Microsoft Project schedules for all alteration projects, capture and reconcile actual labor hours by work‑group (e.g., foundation, electrical, piping), and generate weekly/monthly variance reports that highlight planned versus actual consumption and emerging trends.

Using the data, the analyst will model future workload scenarios to assess whether current engineer/designer staffing can meet projected demand, and will present findings and staffing justification to SUBE leadership. The position requires3+years of experience with Microsoft Project on large‑scale engineering schedules, strong Excel/PowerBI reporting skills, proven ability to collect and clean detailed labor data (preferably in shipbuilding or defense), and excellent written and oral communication for senior‑level briefings.
