The Role

Establishes and maintains engineering and design policies and standards across the company. Provides centralized engineering leadership and coordination for quality and manufacturing issues that cross product lines. As technical engineering expert, maintains cognizance over and acts on behalf of the Company with regard to technical activities in the assigned AoR . Has delegated decision making authority for the company and apprises the Director, Chief Engineer on the final decisions.

This position is for a Deputy CHENG (Principal Engineer) role as the Process and Standards lead. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience across all product lines within NNS. The candidate should understand the engineering, planning, procurement, manufacturing, assembly, and test processes across new construction and overhaul of aircraft carriers and submarines.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Setting the standards across programs for engineering and design
  • Evaluating and recommending the digital tools used
  • Identifying gaps in processes and recommending solutions
  • Helping drive efficiency in processes and removing roadblocks that add little value
  • Establishing and maintaining training material to support design standards
  • Reviewing, recommending, and driving to completion requirement changes that require customer approval
  • Supporting various improvement initiatives
  • Leading quality and self-assessment efforts within engineering
Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design;
Master's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience;
PhD and 4 years of relevant experience

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
