  • Operate and monitor the main propulsion plant, ensuring safe and efficient operation
  • Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on machinery and systems
  • Manage electrical, sewage treatment, lube oil, bilge, and oily water separation systems
  • Ensure proper fuel handling, storage, and machinery lubrication
  • Adhere to U.S. Coast Guard and STCW safety, pollution prevention, and watchkeeping standards
  • Maintain accurate engine-room operation and maintenance logs and records
  • Supervise the work of hourly deck hands
  • Motivate and train deck-hand employees
  • Navigate and manage tugboat and ship movements
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Must be licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard (U.S. Coast Guard License, Radar License)
  • Minimum of three years experience on tugboats prior to examination by U.S. Coast Guard
  • Specialized knowledge of local winds, current tides reading, and weather and shipping hazards
  • Thorough technical knowledge of tug boats and ship movement
  • Ability to work a variable work schedule
  • Ability to work in extreme weather and other environmental conditions encountered on the water
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Ability to supervise, motivate, and train deck hands
