- Operate and monitor the main propulsion plant, ensuring safe and efficient operation
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on machinery and systems
- Manage electrical, sewage treatment, lube oil, bilge, and oily water separation systems
- Ensure proper fuel handling, storage, and machinery lubrication
- Adhere to U.S. Coast Guard and STCW safety, pollution prevention, and watchkeeping standards
- Maintain accurate engine-room operation and maintenance logs and records
- Supervise the work of hourly deck hands
- Motivate and train deck-hand employees
- Navigate and manage tugboat and ship movements
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Must be licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard (U.S. Coast Guard License, Radar License)
- Minimum of three years experience on tugboats prior to examination by U.S. Coast Guard
- Specialized knowledge of local winds, current tides reading, and weather and shipping hazards
- Thorough technical knowledge of tug boats and ship movement
- Ability to work a variable work schedule
- Ability to work in extreme weather and other environmental conditions encountered on the water
- Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
- Ability to supervise, motivate, and train deck hands
Demonstrates expertise in operating and monitoring propulsion plants, performing maintenance and repairs, and managing tugboat and ship movements. Holds a U.S. Coast Guard License and possesses specialized knowledge of maritime navigation and safety standards.
