Position Title:
Nutrition Manager

Life Spire of Virginia is seeking a Nutrition Manager - CDM to support our Newport News Community, The Chesapeake. Please apply if interested!

Position Summary

The Nutrition Manager is responsible, under the direction of the Director of Culinary Services, for applying nutrition principles and ensuring accurate documentation of nutritional information for residents receiving higher levels of care. This role oversees the day-to-day operations of the Dietary Department and supervises culinary staff to ensure quality service, regulatory compliance, and resident satisfaction.

Essential Job Functions Regulatory & Compliance
  • Maintain familiarity with Department of Health regulations, Federal and State nursing home regulations, and Department of Social Services standards governing healthcare, assisted living, memory support, and Culinary Services.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance, including but not limited to MDS documentation and care plans, in cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT).
  • Attend and assist in Risk, QAPI, and Weight meetings to develop plans addressing residents at risk for weight loss.
  • Review plans of care related to nutritional status and document concerns, resolutions, and improvements.
  • Maintain active Certified Dietary Manager (CDM) license and Serv Safe certification during employment.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of:
    • Job Description

    • Resident Care Policy & Procedure Manual
    • Fire and Disaster procedures
    • Problem Solving procedures
Clinical & Nutrition Oversight
  • Collaborate with the Registered Dietitian, Medical Director, and/or Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
  • Process new diet orders and diet changes, ensuring accuracy and timely updates.
  • Interview residents to assess nutritional needs and preferences.
  • Calculate nutritional intake and develop appropriate care plans in cooperation with the Registered Dietitian and in compliance with physicians’ orders.
  • Manage preparation and service of special nourishments and supplemental feedings.
  • Utilize evidence-based educational materials to educate residents and staff on dietary information.
Operations & Leadership
  • Oversee daily operations of the Dietary Department with support from the Director of Culinary Services.
  • Monitor accurate meal service for residents in Assisted Living, Memory Support, and Healthcare.
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, orientation, scheduling, coaching, and in-service training of culinary employees.
  • Supervise staff and foster teamwork and accountability.
  • Promote a positive One Life Spire culture, modeling Integrity, Creativity, and Teamwork.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in a prompt and cooperative manner.
Safety & Professional Standards
  • Follow all established safety rules, policies, and procedures, including participation in fire drills.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all resident information in accordance with Resident Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Adhere to all personnel policies outlined in the Employee Handbook, including policies related to breaks, meal periods, and leave.
Working Hours
  • Minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Schedule may include weekends, varied shifts, and holidays as assigned.
Qualifications Education & Credentials
  • Graduate of a Culinary Manager Training Program OR
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Management or Nutrition.
  • Successful completion of the CDM credentialing exam with active Certified Dietary Manager (CDM), Certified Food Protection Professional (CFPP) certification.
  • Serv Safe Manager Certification (must possess, obtain, and maintain).
Experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of non-commercial culinary, dining, or food service experience preferred.
  • Experience in a life plan community, hospital, assisted living, nursing home, or higher education setting strongly preferred.
