Primary Function / General Purpose Of PositionOccupational Therapists provide patients with treatment to help develop and improve the ability to perform everyday tasks related to work and daily life. They perform patient evaluations and re-evaluations, establish treatment plans based on physician referrals (as required), and document care while coordinating with the treatment team. This role may involve outpatients, inpatients, pediatrics, and off-site locations.
Essential Job Functions- Review physician referrals, patient condition, and medical history to determine occupational therapy treatment needs.
- Conduct and document patient evaluations and re-evaluations; develop treatment and discharge plans per department policies and protocols.
- Plan and administer medically prescribed occupational therapy treatments.
- Design and construct equipment to adapt work and living environments.
- Plan programs involving activities of daily living, functional, pre-vocational, vocational, homemaking skills, and sensory-motor activities.
- Review progress and modify treatment goals; participate in patient care conferences as appropriate.
- Instruct patients and families in home-care treatment procedures.
- Manage patient cases, including communication and coordination of care with the treatment team.
- Precept and supervise clinical learners; orient and direct the work of assistants, aides, students, and volunteers.
- Maintain productivity while delivering quality care that meets department standards.
- Attend and contribute to scheduled meetings and in-services; provide in-services to staff to maintain competency and ongoing education.
Licensed Occupational Therapist in the state of current practice (or eligible for traineeship/temporary license in the state of practice).
Work Experience2 years of experience in an equivalent setting (preferred).
Training / LanguageNone required beyond licensing; language requirements are not specified.
Patient Population- Demonstrates knowledge to provide care appropriate to the age of patients on the assigned unit.
- Understands growth and development across the lifespan and can interpret data to identify patient requirements by age and need.
- Notable age groups:
Neonates (0-4 weeks) to Geriatrics (65+).
- Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads.
- Travel as needed up to 10% (may occur; not guaranteed).
- General office/clinical environment with potential exposure to noise, bright lights, and hazardous substances.
- May be exposed to physical altercations, infectious materials, and adverse weather; may require use of protective equipment and safety protocols.
- May involve travel to off-site locations and periods of working alone.
- Manual dexterity; shift work; patient handling; hearing alarms; reach above shoulders; repetitive movements; dexterity; visual acuity.
- Exposure to chemicals, dust/fumes, electrical hazards, radiographic energy; potential exposure to blood borne pathogens.
- Ability to travel to off-site locations; ability to work under physically demanding conditions.
- Appropriate application of age-specific standards and procedures for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Computer literacy (data entry, word processing, email, records management).
- Analytical and critical thinking abilities; strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality; effective time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to adapt to diverse patient backgrounds and collaborate with the care team.
