Job Summary A pipefitter who has 4 or more years of experience with laying out, assembling, installing, and maintaining pipe systems, pipe supports, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial production and processing systems as required for new construction or maintenance, applying knowledge of system operation and following blueprints with the use of occasional supervision and while always adhering to industry safety standards.

Functions
Selects type and size of pipe, and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.Inspects work site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipe will not cause structural weakness.Plans installation or repair to avoid obstructions and to avoid interfering with activities of other workers.Cuts, threads, and bends pipe.Assembles and installs variety of metal and nonmetal pipes, tubes, and fittings including: iron, steel, copper and plastic.Connects pipe using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints.Secures pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers.Installs and maintains hydraulic and pneumatic components of machines and equipment such as pumps, and cylinders.Follows lockout/tagout procedures to shut down equipment according to OSHA requirements and company safety rules.Sets up and operates various pipe cutting, bending, and threading machinery.Bends, cuts, threads, shapes, fabricates, and installs pipe according to job specifications.Cuts and bores holes in structures such as walls and fixtures before pipe installation; attaches pipes to walls and structures.Installs various types of installation and pipe covering; removes and disposes of old coverings in line with the company hazardous waste procedures and EPA and OSHA requirements.Makes hydraulic pressure test of piping installations. Checks and adjusts controls, gauges, and valves to achieve control of flow or pressure.Inspects and maintains facility piping systems, heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems, water treatment and sewer systems, and burners and heaters. Reports deficiencies and corrects problems.Posts and keeps up to date records of piping systems and controls. Posts records of safety checks and inspection dates of assigned equipment.Performs other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Replace existing piping systems to original design and pressure requirements.Install new piping systems using Nav Sea Drawings and Tech Manuals.Effective planning and layout skills to minimize material waste.Advance use of power tools and machinery associated with pipe fitting.Advanced level of skill in blueprint reading and material requirements.Advanced knowledge of joint design and fit up requirements IAW Mil-Std 22D.Advanced knowledge of requirements for pipe bending IAW Mil-Std 1627C.Expert at setting up hydrostatic testing equipment to shipboard and shop piping systems, including troubleshooting.Thorough knowledge of QA requirements and checkpoints.Expert at recognizing and resolving problems encountered while making shipboard piping runs, i.e. interference, existing piping damage, valve leak by etc.Expert at material requirements, pipe/fitting size identification, pressure requirements.Advanced knowledge of piping support and hanger spacing requirements.Highly motivated and able to supervise 2-3 small crews (fitter, welder, helper, fire watches) simultaneously.Qualify as a tack welder.Ability to use and read calibrated measuring equipment, (micrometers, 0‑6" dial calipers, etc.).Advanced ability to set up and use power tools (threader, bender, hydro pump, etc.).Advanced knowledge of hand tools and usage.Advanced knowledge of power tool safety and inspection prior to use.Proper procedures for running gas and electrical leads (drop test, chaffing at doors and accesses, etc.).Advanced knowledge of piping systems and their hazards (CHT, Fuel, O2, Hydraulics, etc.).Advanced knowledge of system requirements such as cleaning and draining prior to breaching or opening system.OSHA and shipyard requirements prior to commencing work on any piping system.Advanced knowledge of Std Items for welding, testing, maintaining cleanliness, etc.Advanced knowledge of NSTM Chapter 505 for piping systems.Ability to submit and initiate WAFs.Ability to submit and PAI hot work.Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and 4 or more years of related experience in field or equivalent combination of education and experience in field.
- Ability to gain access to military installations.
- Must pass drug test and background check.
