Guidance Counselor

To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women. Essential functions, duties and responsibilities include:

• Registering students new to the school and orienting them to school procedures and the school's varied opportunities for learning.
• Aiding students in course and subject selection; when applicable.
• Maintaining student records and protecting their confidentiality and advising the principal on matters relating to computerized student record keeping.
• Working to resolve student's educational handicaps by applying proper diagnostic techniques and planning their educational programs.
• Working to discover and develop special abilities of students.
• Working with teachers and parents to prevent students from dropping out of school.
• Assisting in arranging for tutors and summer school work for under achieving students.
• Guiding students in their selection of school and community activities in which to participate.
• Obtaining and disseminatings occupational information to students and to classes studying occupations and advising the principal on matters relating to computerized occupational information systems.
• Helping students evaluate career interests and choices.
• Organizing and conducting annual "Career Day".
• Working with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
• Conferring with parents whenever necessary.
• Assisting students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation.
• Interpreting the guidance program to the community.
• Working with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student personnel services department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
• Advising administrators and faculty on the matters of student discipline.
• Assisting in the orientation of new faculty members.
• Remaining readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
• Taking an active role in interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
• Making home visits, when necessary, to building a healthy rapport between parents and children, parents and school, and students and school.
• Providing small group counseling when appropriate to deal with similar student concerns.
• Performing other duties related to the position as assigned by the principal.

Qualifications and

Education Requirements:

• Valid Certification as a Guidance Counselor
• Valid School Social Worker Certification also accepted in lieu of Guidance Counselor
• A minimum of three years of experience, preferred
