As a SEACOR Field and Data Technician (Biological Science Assistant) with the Marine Resources Program (MRP) in Newport, Oregon, you will conduct intertidal and subtidal surveys of shellfish populations and habitats in coastal estuaries as part of the SEACOR (Shellfish and Estuarine Assessment of Coastal Oregon) team.

Duties include:

  • Participate in surveys of shellfish resources for population assessments including species composition, length, weight, and age
  • Collect pertinent data on estuarine habitats (e.g. substrate, eelgrass)
  • Operate boats during field surveys as needed to transport field staff to and from field sites and support boat-based surveys of shellfish and estuarine resources
  • Participate in collection of ground-truth data and deploying ground control points for Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) surveys.
  • Gather, compile, and enter shellfish population and habitat data into field data sheets, ArcGIS Apps on tablets in the field, and Access databases; perform error checking and quality assurance

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background:

  • Fieldwork experience in marine intertidal systems
  • Experience with small boat handling, operation, safety, and maintenance
  • Experience with shellfish species, fisheries, and estuarine habitats
  • Experience with intertidal ecology experimental design and gear preparation
  • Experience with collecting data using tablets and/or ArcGIS Apps (Field Maps, Survey 1-2-3)
  • Experience or familiarity with analytical software packages, such as relational databases (e.g., Microsoft Access), spatial mapping (e.g., ArcGIS), and data management and analysis in coding language (e.g., R statistical computing)
  • Anyone who has or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological or marine sciences.
