Resident Assistants (RAs) act as a liaison between the Office of University Housing and the students who live within the residential community. RAs are responsible for facilitating an environment conducive to living and learning by way of role modeling, programmatic opportunities, maintenance referrals, and policy enforcement. RAs receive training to perform duties effectively.
Physical RequirementsAn RA must be able to move through a three to six‑story building via stairs and climb and descend stairs for duty rounds. An RA must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
ScheduleThe Summer RA position starts on May 9, 2026, and ends on August 6, 2026. The time commitment averages approximately 20 hours per week over the summer term.
Compensation- Housing scholarship
- Stipend of $145 biweekly
- University Housing Staff Meal Plan
- University housing residential space (roster assignment)
- Summer RAs may take summer classes if they choose
All compensation is subject to federal/state taxation.
Primary Responsibilities- Effectively communicate, give directions, and lead students in emergency situations
- Read documents such as policy manuals and safety procedures
- Prepare reports and correspondence
- Lock and unlock doors using a key system and operate the master key release system
- Observe surroundings, identify problems or students in distress, and respond per University Housing protocol
- Respond immediately to potential crisis situations during duty
- Plan, execute, and support community development efforts, including monthly programs and intentional interactions with residents
- Conduct regularly scheduled room safety checks, perform check‑ins and check‑outs, and attend weekly meetings
- Work a minimum of 10 hours a week at the Callahan Desk (compensation included in stipend)
- Serve night and weekend duty on a rotating schedule (average 1 weeknight per week and 1 full weekend per month)
- Complete assorted tasks such as key inventories, maintenance checks, and preparing check‑in packets
All interested students must complete an online form with essay questions and attach a resume to the HR application. Essays must be completed by the closing date.
- Previously working/living in residential housing preferred
- Currently enrolled NKU student registered for summer term
- MUST NOT be enrolled in more than one class during summer term; no overlap in five‑ or eight‑week sessions
- Undergraduate cumulative GPA 2.5; graduate cumulative GPA 3.5
- Must be able to live in University‑assigned on‑campus housing
- Must be able to perform light physical tasks
- Available to attend weekly staff meetings
- Must have permission to work outside job limited to 10 hours per week
- Must be in good financial and behavioral standing with the University
- Pre‑employment criminal background check required
