Job Overview
ODFW’s Marine Resources Program is seeking a Fishery Information Specialist (Office Specialist
2) to work in Newport, Oregon. The successful candidate will provide administrative, clerical, and technical support for the timely and accurate processing of fisheries data—including groundfish logbooks, fish tickets, biological sample data, and other related datasets—while ensuring the highest standards of quality for use in fishery assessment, monitoring, and management. The position supports the Pacific Fisheries Information Network (PacFIN) data repository and works closely with program operations to maintain data integrity and regulatory compliance.
- Process and upload fisheries data sets to PacFIN and other databases.
- Maintain data quality through QA/QC checks and identify discrepancies across multiple sources.
- Support data system operations, including the creation of reports, summaries, and trend analyses.
- Provide administrative and clerical support to the marine fisheries team.
- Maintain procedure manuals and track biological samples and associated documentation.
- Respond to data requests and explain data issues and corrections in a customer‑service style.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal commercial fisheries regulations and report potential violations.
- Option 1:
Two years of general clerical experience, including keyboarding and word processing. - Option 2:
Associate degree in any field. - Option 3:
Equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Data management and technical skills – experience with MS Access, Excel, and database uploads.
- Analytical and problem‑solving skills – ability to identify discrepancies and interpret biological and fisheries data.
- Administrative and organizational skills – experience maintaining manuals and reconciling biological samples.
- Communication and collaboration skills – experience providing responsive customer service and explaining data issues.
- Regulatory knowledge – understanding of state and federal commercial fisheries regulations and reporting requirements.
