POSITION:
Special Education Teacher (Alt Assessment)

LOCATION:

Pell Elementary

REPORTS TO:

Principal and Director of Student Services

SCHOOL YEAR: 2026/2027

JOB DESCRIPTION:

To devise and implement programs for students who have identified disabilities which prevent them from learning through traditional methods.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must hold a valid RI Certificate in Elementary Special Education, grades 1-6 Or Severe/Profound All grades
  • Demonstrate knowledge of teaching strategies that will address the unique needs of identified students with special needs.
  • Ability to know and utilize technology and communication devices in the teaching and learning process.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, educational experience, teaching experience, and the interview process.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in implementing Early Childhood Standards.
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Successful completion of the Science of Reading Training

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet children’s specific learning profiles, and social needs of students;
  • Develops specific individualized goals and objectives to address students at their emotional level;
  • Progress monitor each child in order to differentiate and support academic and social learning;
  • Progress monitor each child at their level to develop standards-based goals and objectives which address the academic and social needs of the student;
  • Develops standards-based Individual Education Programs, progress reports, pre-tests and post-tests of student’s academic, social and communication skills;
  • Uses a wide range of teaching materials, technology and various approaches to learning; teaches all core content
  • Engages parents and students in developing all domains of the Rhode Island Early Learning & Development standards;
  • Establishes, supports, teaches positive school behavior;
  • Works as a team member to help students progress;
  • Provide training, guidance, and supervision to para educators
  • Collaborates with other educators and therapists to provide a continuum of service options;
  • Uses data collection and assessment to track and document students growth;
  • Completes DLM assessments on all grades 3 & 4 students
  • Provides case management and coordination of services;
  • Helps parents to understand the specific needs of their children;
  • Honors I.D.E.A. and all other applicable regulations
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of education by reading journals and publications, and attending professional meetings, seminars, and workshops;
  • Be willing to participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Performs such other duties as assigned by the Principal or Director of Student Services.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten-month position; appropriate salary/benefits in accordance with the Teachers’ Contract. Evaluation in accordance with the process as established by the Rhode Island Department of Education for certified educators.
