JOB DESCRIPTION:

To support students with social-emotional learning (SEL) and emotional needs, this individual would provide targeted social-emotional support to students identified by Pell administration and the SEL team.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and

EXPERIENCE:

• Must hold a valid Rhode Island Department of Education certificate as a Guidance Counselor
• At least five (5) years of successful teaching experience at the Elementary school level.
• Ability to know and utilize technology as it pertains to this position.
• Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by coursework, educational experience, school-level involvement and/or system-wide professional activities, and the interview process.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students with social-emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs.
• Deliver classroom lessons focused on social-emotional learning (SEL), conflict resolution, emotional regulation, bullying prevention, and character education.
• Identify students in need of additional support and develop intervention plans in collaboration with teachers, families, and support staff.
• Participate as an active member of the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) team to review student data, monitor progress, and recommend interventions.
• Conduct risk assessments and provide crisis intervention for students experiencing emotional or behavioral challenges.
• Promote a positive school climate by coordinating school-wide SEL initiatives, kindness campaigns, and character education programs.
• Collaborate with teachers to implement classroom strategies that promote positive behavior, emotional regulation, and student success.
• Consult and communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress, concerns, and available community resources.
• Refer students and families to outside mental health and community agencies when appropriate.
• Support attendance improvement efforts by identifying barriers and working with families to increase student attendance.
• Assist in developing and implementing behavior intervention plans and restorative practices.
• Promote a positive school climate by coordinating school-wide SEL initiatives, kindness campaigns, and character education programs.
• Support transitions for students entering kindergarten, changing schools, or moving between grade levels.
• Facilitate peer mediation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving among students.
• Encourage student leadership through programs such as student councils, mentoring, Champion Academy, or leadership clubs.
• Coordinate and participate in crisis response efforts following traumatic events affecting students or staff.
• Maintain confidential student records in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines.
• Serve on school-based teams, including MTSS, PBIS/behavior teams, Section 504 teams, and other student support committees.
• Analyze behavioral, attendance, and SEL data to identify trends and develop targeted interventions.
• Collaborate with community partners to expand resources and opportunities for students and families.
• Advocate for equitable access to educational opportunities and support the academic, social, and emotional success of all students.
• Perform all other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten-month position; appropriate salary in accordance with the Teachers’ Contract. Evaluation in accordance with the process as established by the Rhode Island Department of Education for certified educators.
