POSITION:
English Language Learner Teacher (One Year Only)

LOCATION:

Pell Elementary

REPORTS TO:

Building Principal and Director of English Language Learners

SCHOOL YEAR: 2026/2027

JOB DESCRIPTION:

To create flexible elementary grade programs and an environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students; to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further education, in accordance with each student’s ability; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and

EXPERIENCE:

  • Hold or be currently eligible for a valid Rhode Island Certification as an Elementary ELL educator (K-6);
  • Master's Degree in Elementary Education, TESOL preferred;
  • Evidence of developing teaching strategies that will address the unique needs of each student;
  • Ability to know and utilize technology in the teaching and learning process;
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, education experience, teaching, educational experience, and the interview process;
  • Any such alternatives to the above qualifications as the committee may deem acceptable and appropriate.
  • Successful completion of the Science of Reading Training

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To work directly with the Pell Administration team and the Director of English Learners in identifying non-English speaking students
  • Assume responsibility for testing, scheduling and the teaching of English using a variety of evidence-based ELL methodologies and strategies.
  • Provide ELL push in and/or pull-out instruction to students in grades K-4.
  • Assist in administering required language proficiency and academic achievement tests for determining placement for students in grades K-4, along with ongoing monitoring of student progress.
  • Maintain a database of ELL and ELL-eligible students.
  • Assist in developing language acquisition support plans (ELL plans) for all ELL students and work with classroom teachers to implement plans.
  • Assist in completing ELL Accommodations Forms and ELL Progress Reports for elementary school students.
  • Work with classroom teachers to support differentiated instruction.
  • Monitor and support classrooms from K-4 th grade.
  • Assist in developing appropriate curriculum to help ELL students acquire the English language.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students, including whole group instruction for learning/small-group or individual learning.
  • Assist in compiling and maintaining a profile summary (record of achievement and progress) for each student.
  • Assist in gathering and reporting data for reporting requirements and other required reports (to the State, Dept of Education, census, grant applications, annual report, etc.).
  • Establish and maintain communication with parents of students in the program.
  • Engage parents and families in their student’s learning and acting as an ambassador for the school in the community attending community/school events.
  • Contribute productively to the school as a whole.
  • Participate in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
  • If needed, attend IEP, Section 504, or other related meetings necessary for student assessment and/or compliance with federal and/or state law.
