About the RoleThe Assistant Stage Manager will support the Stage Manager, creative teams, performers, and festival staff throughout the rehearsal and presentation process. This is a hands‑on role ideal for someone interested in stage management, producing, directing, musical theater development, live event production, or arts administration.
Responsibilities Include- Assist the Stage Manager with daily rehearsal setup and breakdown
- Help prepare rehearsal rooms, materials, schedules, signage, scripts, scores, and supplies
- Track attendance and support daily check‑in for performers, musicians, and creative team members
- Take rehearsal notes as needed and help maintain clear records
- Help distribute schedules, updates, and rehearsal‑related communications
- Assist with script revisions and distribution
- Support communication between the Stage Manager, creative teams, performers, festival staff, and production personnel
- Assist with rehearsal materials, music stands, chairs, tables, and other basic room needs
- Help maintain an organized, calm, and efficient rehearsal environment
- Support performer logistics during rehearsals, tech, and public presentations
- Assist with backstage or front‑of‑house coordination as needed during performances
- Jump in wherever needed to help the festival run smoothly
- Highly organized, reliable, and detail‑oriented
- Calm under pressure and comfortable in a fast‑moving creative environment
- Strong communicator with a positive, collaborative attitude
- Punctual, professional, discreet, and dependable
Comfortable taking direction and following through on tasks - Able to anticipate needs and solve small problems proactively
- Interested in musical theater, new work development, stage management, or arts administration
- Prior theater, stage management, production, music, or event experience preferred, but not required for the right candidate
Newport New Works is a musical theater festival dedicated exclusively to the development of new musical. Each summer, the festival brings together writers, composers, directors, music directors, musicians, Broadway performers, and emerging artists for an intensive rehearsal and presentation process in Newport, Rhode Island. The festival offers audiences a rare behind‑the‑scenes look at how new musical are created, revised, and brought to life.
