BASIC FUNCTION
The Assistant Director of Public Safety shall oversee several administrative functions of the department, serve as a member of command staff and provide input on department services and operations for fourteen Public Safety Officers. The Assistant Director shall be responsible for the development and implementation of departmental rules, regulations and policies, facilitate training and certifications, be a point of contact for local fire and law enforcement, oversee the Patrol Commander and daily patrol operations, compile and monitor daily logs for statistical analysis, records maintenance and distribution of reports, fire safety compliance, purchasing, departmental maintenance, regulating parking, and chair the board of appeals, including tracking, scheduling and prosecution.
Review, evaluate and approve special accommodation vehicle requests and enforce violations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The Assistant Director shall be trained in and up to date on federal mandates and requirements of Title IX, Clery and other elements of Higher Ed required by the Department of Education; assist in compiling statistical information, weekly crime log updates and the disclosure of crime statistics for the University's Annual Security Report in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Act.
- The Assistant Director shall supervise and develop department staff, facilitating professional opportunities to improve the individual capability of officers and the management of each officer's performance. This individual shall work with supervisors to track and coordinate performance evaluations of staff, ensuring timely submission to the Director and the Office of Human Resources.
- Assist with the coordination and planning of special events, dignitary visits and other large scale campus activities, including assessing the needs for security personnel and overall safety and security at campus venues.
- Ensure that all department equipment is maintained in good, safe working condition and schedule repairs of equipment in need of service, including campus lighting, emergency telephones and AED inspections. Maintain all files, records, incident, and fire/alarm reports. Coordinate the distribution of these reports to proper departments and personnel for corrective action. Maintain all purchasing records and serve as scheduler for the uniform, and fire safety respectively.
- Work closely with other university offices, collaborating on campus events, including: conferences, concerts, protests, semester fire drills and other university sanctioned programs.
- Be familiar with all buildings and university property.
- Update and coordinate with the Director, all revisions pertaining to university parking and security literature, be familiar with the responsibilities of a Public Safety Officer and be knowledgeable of all department policies, procedures and University regulations.
- Participate in hiring new staff, including performing comprehensive background checks for eligible candidates for hire. Upon the direction of the Director, conduct internal investigations of staff in regard to alleged violations of departmental rules and regulations and policies of the university.
