The Mobility Assistant works under the supervision of the Staff Registered Nurse (RN) in collaboration with the Rehabilitation Services Therapists (LRS) and within hospital and department policies and procedures. The role assists in caring for patients and/or families from admission to discharge, with an emphasis on age‑specific needs.

Responsibilities
  • Provide mobility interventions, including safe bed mobility, transfers to and from bed and chair/commode, and ambulation with or without an assistive device.
  • Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) focused on mobility independence, such as ambulation, positioning, dressing, and toileting.
  • Ensure accurate fitting of assistive devices and progress patients toward the Johns Hopkins‑Highest Level of Mobility (JH‑HLM) goal for the day.
  • Communicate all pertinent observations to the responsible RN and report patient complaints or abnormal signs (vital signs, fever, chest pain, bleeding, etc.).
  • Maintain a safe patient environment and comply with infection‑control practices per hospital policy.
  • Perform basic patient‑care skills (e.g., vital‑sign reading and recording) under RN direction.
  • Assist in the nursing process: collect baseline and ongoing assessment data, follow the management plan, and monitor patient response to mobility interventions.
  • Provide or reinforce patient instruction regarding safe mobility, gait sequencing, and weight‑bearing status as appropriate.
  • Maintain quality‑assurance standards, safety, environmental, and infection‑control protocols according to hospital procedures.
  • Demonstrate ability to act in emergency/code situations, including CPR.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate or general‑equivalent diploma.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with a Healthcare Provider.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant preferred; healthcare‑focused student or equivalent experience/education in patient mobility acceptable.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English; basic computer skills required.
  • Ability to identify and report unsafe situations to the Staff Nurse.
  • Knowledge of caring for patients across the lifespan, including aging processes and cultural considerations.
  • Experience or education in patient mobility recommended.
  • Interpersonal skills for effective interaction with patients, visitors, physicians, and hospital staff at all levels.
  • Reading and mathematical abilities sufficient for completing documentation and operating monitoring equipment.
  • Physical capability to lift/turn patients and equipment, bend, squat, stoop, and stand for prolonged periods.
