We are located on 170 Wellington Ave in Newport, RI.

Launch Driver – Ida Lewis Yacht Club (ILYC) Position Summary

The Ida Lewis Yacht Club is seeking a reliable, safety‑focused, and personable Launch Driver to operate our 26’ Oldport launch, Aloha. This role is a vital part of our waterfront operations, providing safe and efficient transportation for members and guests between the Club and vessels in the mooring field.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong boat handling skills, a commitment to safety, and a high level of customer service reflective of ILYC’s standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely operate the Club’s 26’ Oldport launch, Aloha transporting members, guests, and staff to and from moorings
  • Provide courteous, professional, and welcoming service to all passengers
  • Assist passengers with boarding, disembarking, and handling light gear as needed
  • Maintain awareness of weather, tides, and harbor traffic to ensure safe operations
  • Communicate clearly with the Dock Office and waterfront staff via VHF radio
  • Perform daily vessel checks including fuel levels, safety equipment, and general cleanliness
  • Report any mechanical issues, safety concerns, or incidents promptly
  • Assist with general waterfront operations when not actively running the launch
  • Adhere to all Club policies and U.S. Coast Guard regulations at all times
Qualifications
  • Current U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s License (Required)
  • Valid TWIC Card (Required)
  • Small boat handling experience (Required)
  • Launch driving experience preferred (training available for qualified licensed candidates)
  • Availability to work weekends and peak summer periods (Required)
  • Strong understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and local waters preferred
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast‑paced environment
  • Dependable, punctual, and team‑oriented
Working Conditions &

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to assist passengers safely on and off the vessel
  • Capable of standing for extended periods and handling lines and equipment
  • Flexible schedule including weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed
