Overview

The Vocational Instructor facilitates training pathways in Workforce Readiness and Culinary Arts theory, while supporting a Comprehensive Construction track. Utilizing established curricula, the Instructor delivers lessons in career exploration, employability skills, and personal finance, as well as certification courses such as Serv Safe, Pro Start, OSHA, NCCER, and Flagging. The Instructor will also pilot new curriculum as the program evolves.

Core Duties
  • Delivers classroom-based lessons, adapting established curricula into daily lesson plans and managing course pacing to ensure participants meet certification deadlines.
  • Proctors certification exams and maintains detailed records of participant attendance, grades, and competency checklists.
  • Ensures a secure learning environment through constant supervision and rigorous tool and equipment inventories for all instructional materials.
  • Collaborates with correctional staff and external partners to model professional work ethics and teach "soft skills" essential for post‑release employment.
Candidate Requirements

Candidates must be able to lead structured educational programs and manage a classroom effectively. Experience in the culinary arts or skilled trades is preferred but not required. The successful candidate must be willing to undergo training and become a certified instructor/proctor for Serv Safe, Pro Start, OSHA, NCCER, and Flagging. The department will provide all necessary training for the right individual.

Computer application competency is required to navigate the Learning Management System (LMS), manage training records, and track participant progress.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in an institutional setting with constant exposure to and interaction with incarcerated individuals. Incumbents must be able to operate shop machinery, lift and carry moderately heavy equipment, and supervise correctional facility inmates. An incumbent should possess a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduation AND five (5) years or more experience with an apprenticeship level in trades
  • OR High school graduation and experience working with a vocational training program, delivering vocational training, AND one (1) year or more of experience as described above. Certified in training (e.g., NCCER).
Preferred Qualifications

Experienced vocational instructors with a proven track record.

Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion, or demotion into an AHS classified position or persons exercising re‑employment (RIF) rights.
