Job Description
- Supervises and evaluates the work of subordinate staff, effectively recommends personnel actions related to selection, disciplinary procedures, performance, leave of absence, grievances, work scheduled and assignments.
- Directs health services to assure achievement of optimal level of care to offenders to meet care standards.
- Establishes and maintains guidelines for staffing within the health care agency to assure adequate nursing coverage all offender areas.
- Maintains a nursing schedule to cover the institution 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Assures annual evaluations are completed as assigned.
- Provides duty officer coverage.
- Recruits and retains nursing staff.
- Primarily responsible for development, implementation and revision of institutional health services procedures.
- Assures monthly nursing meetings and minutes are complete and distributed.
- Participates in inter-departmental meetings to advocate for nursing department needs and coordinate health services with other disciplines. Ensures employee’s health program is accurate.
- Administers special programs such as infection control, staff development, nursing quality improvement and utilization review.
- Attends institutional and executive and/or leadership meetings to represent Health Services.
- Is active member of the quarterly P&T committee and Nurse Managers monthly QA on nursing charts.
- Covers nursing shifts during the absence of staff. Attends Nurse Manager meeting in-person and virtual.

- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and experience equal to three years of full-time supervisory/management nursing experience.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Nursing and experience equal to one year of full-time supervisory/management nursing experience.
- An equivalent combination of the required education and experience, substituting one year of experience for thirty semester hours or equivalent of education; no substitution for three years of full-time supervisory/management nursing experience.
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator's Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
