Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education from four-year college or university
- Valid Kansas State Certification in grade level or content area assigned
- Valid Kansas State Certification in ESOL (K-12)
Teaching experience with students that need ELL services.
Reports to:
Building Principal.
To support the academic, linguistic, and social-emotional growth of English Learners and at-risk students by providing targeted instruction and interventions aligned with Newton USD 373's guaranteed and viable curriculum, state standards, and national standards. The ELL/At-Risk Teacher will proactively identify and support students in need, collaborate with classroom teachers and support staff to implement evidence-based instructional strategies that promote language development, academic achievement, and student success.
PerformanceResponsibilities
- Facilitates learning and instruction by using multiple presentation methods: demonstrating, modeling, visual representations, and strategies that aid in supplementing and engaging students' content.
- Collaborates with teachers and the ELL Coordinator to adapt and scaffold materials, assignments, and assessments to improve second language acquisition using Kansas ELL standards, Newton USD 373 curriculum, and state standards.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear outcomes for all lessons, units, projects, etc., to communicate these objectives to students.
- Administers assessments to evaluate the progress and results, and issues reports to inform all stakeholders of student progress.
- Keeps and maintains in the SIS: grades, progress, attendance, lesson plans, student records, discipline information, parent contact log, as needed or required.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and meets the needs of students.
- Maintains a positive classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
- Ensures communication and translation/interpretation for stakeholders (parents/guardians) in their native language when possible.
- Participates in multiple meeting types: faculty, professional, educational conferences, professional learning and workshops.
- Creates and maintains daily schedules to meet the needs of ELL students and supports ESOL Instructional Aides to ensure coverage.
- Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
- Ability to use technology as an instructional tool.
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality regarding student and staff information in order to remain in compliance with legal requirements and maintain a professional work environment.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
- Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
- Ability to meet and instruct assigned classes in the designated locations.
- Ability to create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
- Ability to assess the accomplishments of students and provide progress reports as required.
- Ability to govern student conduct and maintain order in the classroom in a fair manner.
Terms of Employment:
Salary and work year to be established by the board of education.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
