Job Description

The Audio and Event Services Specialist provides audio and general AV production support to all events on Boston College Campus. The responsibilities include event support, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance, consultation and event planning, office work, student employee supervision, and technology research.

Event Support
  • Participate in the setup, troubleshooting (as necessary), and breakdown of audio systems as requested by various event organizers.
  • Serve as an escalation point for any technical problems.
  • Help maintain equipment inventories for all our on-campus locations.
  • Work with sound equipment vendors to bridge between their systems and ours for large-scale campus events.
  • Perform this work at a high standard with a willingness to learn from, support, and educate those around you.
Troubleshooting and Preventive Maintenance
  • Keep up-to-date with the status of equipment in our offices and classrooms.
  • Fix smaller issues as they arise.
  • Report larger issues to the department supervisor.
  • Maintain open communication regarding issues and fixes.
Consultation and Event Planning
  • Stay updated on email threads, calls, and meetings regarding more involved events.
  • Communicate with event coordinators when necessary.
  • Keep the department supervisor informed on all updates and pass information along as necessary.
Supervising Student Workers
  • Ensure that student employees meet departmental standards.
  • Mentor student staff and provide orientation and training to new and current students, ensuring that student formation practices are followed.
  • Consult with the Supervisor on any issues.
  • Participate in the selection process for new student hires.
  • Track student worker attendance and ensure student-supported events run smoothly.
Technology Research
  • Research and recommend the purchase of improved audio and event production tools.
  • Advise the department supervisor on capital and operating equipment purchases.
  • Maintain an up-to-date awareness of new and emerging audio and event production technology.
Typical Work Schedule
  • 9am-5pm or 10am-6pm (times negotiable), Monday-Friday.
  • There are frequent early morning, weekend, and evening events split between the supervisor, two specialists, and student workers.
  • Overtime hours occur, as directed by the supervisor, based on coverage requirements.
  • Average workload is 40-45 hours per week with the busiest weeks (3-4 times a year).

Hiring Range: $28.21/hr to $35.27/hr pay rate commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements
  • A minimum of two years of experience in live event audio production and support.
  • Coursework in Sound Production or Audio Engineering.
  • A proficiency in audio production software and in basic audio system setup, maintenance, and breakdown.
  • The capability to manage projects independently and as part of a collaborative team effort.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, specifically to train non-technical people in the use of audio technology.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite.
  • The ability to push a cart of equipment and lift up to 50lbs.
  • A valid driver’s license for frequent use of the department van.
  • A positive attitude and an ability to work well with others.
  • Must be a quick learner, organized, and engaged.
Preferred/Desired Skills
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Audio, Multimedia, Communication, or other related AV disciplines.
  • Experience in leading, educating, and supporting student workers.
  • Experience working at a higher education institution.
  • Experience with providing audio support for large corporate events, functions, conferences and musical performances.
  • Experience with Crestron and Extron systems, Dante and Shure audio equipment.
