Salary: $60,000 to $72,000 per year
Job DescriptionDearborn Academy is a therapeutic day school serving students with emotional and specific learning disabilities. As a High School Special Education History Teacher, you will develop and implement a history curriculum responsive to students’ diverse needs and Individualized Education Program (IEP) requirements. You will collaborate with the teaching team, clinical staff, caregivers, and administration to support students’ academic and social growth.
Responsibilities- Plan and implement individual and group lessons aligned to students’ IEPs, Massachusetts State Standards, NGSS, Common Core Standards and the school curriculum.
- Create routines that support development and practice of executive function skills.
- Integrate assistive technology and multimodal learning into instruction.
- Provide ongoing assessment of student progress and gather data for quarterly reporting.
- Collaborate with the teaching team to review data and internal/external reports & support student improvement.
- Supervise students at all times and lead weekly community-building circles as part of the restorative practice model.
- Collaborate with clinical staff to develop approaches reflecting the students’ clinical and social‑emotional needs.
- Communicate cooperatively with all staff to maximize student success.
- Attend required school meetings (staff meetings, in-services, emergency meetings, etc.).
- Participate in IEP and family meetings, and write educational plans, quarterly progress reports and other documentation professionally and timely.
- Establish productive relationships with families, sharing information and maintaining regular positive contact.
- Participate actively in weekly supervision and supervise an assistant teacher.
- Maintain a trauma‑informed, organized and welcoming classroom celebrating diversity.
- Support school-wide activities (field days, celebrations, clubs, etc.).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in education or related field preferred.
- License in Moderate Disabilities (5‑12) preferred;
License in history preferred. - Experience teaching students with diverse learning styles, social/emotional disabilities, and in 1:1, small group, and inclusion settings using a strengths‑based, highly structured, multisensory approach.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Collaborative team player able to synthesize data and diverse viewpoints.
- Solution‑focused, strengths‑based mindset when addressing challenges.
- Demonstrated compassion, curiosity, and kindness toward students, families, and staff.
- Respect for diversity and commitment to an inclusive environment.
- Willingness to learn or write IEPs if not yet experienced.
