A leading battery technology company we're partnered with is developing next-gen battery production equipment to enable scalable, high-performance lithium-ion cells. The team is rapidly growing and seeking a Principal Controls Engineer to define, implement, and industrialize advanced control systems. This role spans R&D through commercialization, combining hands‑on engineering with technical leadership.
The engineer will lead the design and deployment of advanced hardware and software control systems for complex, multi‑module machinery. Responsibilities include architecting closed‑loop control strategies, setting standards, integrating motion and sensor systems, and guiding equipment from prototypes to production. The role bridges process, mechanical, and automation teams while providing technical strategy and hands‑on execution.
- Serve as a technical authority on control system architecture and automation strategy.
- Lead design, development, and deployment of control systems from R&D to production.
- Architect and optimize closed‑loop control strategies.
- Evaluate, select, and integrate PLCs, IPCs, drives, and sensors.
- Implement advanced sensing, motion, and ML‑enabled predictive control.
- Collaborate with process and mechanical teams for scalable system architectures.
- Integrate multi‑module systems into turnkey equipment solutions.
- Troubleshoot complex system‑level issues and guide commissioning.
- Manage vendor engagement for hardware and software solutions.
- Oversee electrical panel architecture and builds.
- Ensure designs meet IEC standards, industrial safety, and OT network requirements.
- Maintain data pipelines using SQL and Python tools.
- Produce and review control system documentation.

Desired Background
- 12+ years in industrial controls, automation, or advanced manufacturing.
- Experience architecting and automating multi‑module machinery.
- Expertise in closed‑loop control systems, motion, and sensors.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols and multiple automation platforms.
- HMI/SCADA proficiency;
Ignition experience preferred. - Familiarity with ISA‑88 principles, IEC standards, and OT networks.
- Strong problem‑solving and technical innovation skills.
- Experience leading vendor interactions and electrical panel builds.
- Proficiency with SQL databases and Python‑based automation tools.
