Staff Electrical Engineer – Substation Design
We are in need of a Staff Electrical Engineer to assist in the design and development of high-voltage substations (13kV–500kV) for various projects both in the U.S. and internationally. This position will focus on the areas of protection and control and/or physical layout design, covering a wide range of projects from small distribution upgrades to large transmission systems. Your work will involve critical infrastructure that will enhance the resilience and reliability of the electrical grid for years to come.
MainResponsibilities
- Execute design deliverables for substations, including physical layouts, grounding systems, raceways, auxiliary power, and protection and control
- Develop project scopes, proposals, cost estimates, and schedules
- Prepare design documents for substations such as one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel arrangements
- Conduct calculations and studies regarding grounding, lightning protection, and load analysis
- Specify and assess equipment for procurement and factory acceptance testing
- Collaborate with internal teams — civil/structural, transmission line, and SCADA/telecom — to deliver fully integrated designs
- Guide junior engineers and participate in quality assessments
- Engage directly with clients, support construction teams, and contribute to business growth activities
- Lead or assist with special projects like relay settings, 3D design, or involvement in technical committees
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience (or a Master’s degree with at least 2 years)
- Preferred certification as an EIT
- Prior experience in substation design or electrical consulting
- Proficiency in engineering software and design tools (AutoCAD, Micro Station, Microsoft Office Suite)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities
- Demonstrated capacity to handle numerous tasks and collaborate with diverse teams
