Job Overview
Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher I (ETDI) supports the City of Newton's public safety response by receiving and responding to 911 calls, other emergency and non‑emergency requests, and coordinating with police, fire and EMS. The role requires rapid decision making, effective communication, and multitasking in a high‑stress environment.
Essential Functions- Receive and respond to 911 and other oral and electronic emergency inquiries; assess severity and determine appropriate response.
- Obtain necessary caller information using Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) protocols.
- Monitor and respond to silent, intrusion and other alarm systems.
- Provide information and coordinate resources with police, fire, and EMS as directed.
- Log incidents, maintain accurate records in CAD and other computer systems.
- Perform periodic equipment tests (police radio, telephone, alarm systems).
- Contact third‑party vendors for information on city infrastructure or ongoing incidents.
- Participate in emergency drills, training and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations and policies.
- Perform any other duties assigned by supervisor or Chief of Police.
Education, Training and
Experience:
- High School/GED and 1–3 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
- Typing speed minimum 30 words per minute.
- Must be available for rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.
- Must obtain Massachusetts State 911 certification within timeframe specified by City.
Special Requirements:
- Background check for public safety personnel; record must not conflict with law enforcement work.
- Commitment to continuous public service and safety.
- Ability to pass training for Police and Fire dispatch and qualify for promotion to ETDII.
Knowledge, Skills & Ability:
- Knowledge of emergency communication practices, police/fire operations, CAD, and municipal geography.
- Skill in reading documents, writing reports, and communicating with citizens and city personnel.
- Ability to gather and relay information quickly and accurately, remain calm under pressure, and solve complex problems.
- Computer proficiency and understanding of related technology.
ETDs work a 4‑on/2‑off schedule with every sixth weekend off. New dispatchers receive training on the day or first half shift and then may be assigned to day, first half, or last half shift. Night, weekend and holiday work is required.

Salary:
Step 1 – $61,925 to Step 11 – $83,221
