SummaryThis position provides 1:1 nursing services for students with specific health care needs in classrooms, school‑based environments, and community settings such as field trips. The role may also involve providing nursing services for a small group of students with specific health care needs.
Qualifications- A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) with pediatric experience.
- 1‑3 years previous nursing experience in either an acute care or home setting.
- Current and valid MA LPN/RN License.
- Current and valid CPR/AED certification.
Job Duties and Responsibilities (Not Limited To)
- Review and carry out doctor’s orders for care and medication administration during the school day.
- Provide direct student care.
- Implement an Individual Health Plan and Emergency Action Plan for the school setting.
- Collaborate with the school nurse.
- Manage and maintain any necessary health related equipment.
- Provide nursing care and medication administration for assigned student during transport (if provided by Newton Public Schools).
- Document all nursing care in the electronic health record (SNAP).
- Help develop and be familiar with a safe evacuation plan for student(s).
- Accompany student in the event of emergency medical transport.
- Attend field trips.
- Attend student meetings, such as planning meetings and IEP meetings, as requested.
- Attend extracurricular programs as requested.
- Assist to perform health screenings, when otherwise not assigned.
- Provide medication administration, health assessments and care for students and staff based on the nursing process.
- Document all health encounters.
- Communicate health information to school nurse and parents in a timely manner.
- When available provide back up to the school nurses.
- Perform other nursing services and adaptive care skills such as toileting per job description and as assigned by the Director of School Health Services.
- Consistent and on‑time attendance is required for supervision and instruction of the students.
- Cover school nurse absences as assigned by the Director of School Health Services.
Physical Requirements
Work Environment:
Majority of work is performed in the community or a school/classroom environment. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear. The employee is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch, and/or kneel. The employee must be able to physically manage student supplies and equipment and respond to medical emergencies.
