About Newton-Wellesley Hospital

Newton‑Wellesley Hospital (NWH) is a comprehensive medical center located in Newton, Massachusetts. The palliative care division supports patients with serious illnesses—cancer, dementia, congestive heart failure, COPD, end‑stage renal disease, and others—through multidisciplinary symptom management, emotional support, and care coordination.

Role Overview

We are seeking a part‑time (20 hours per week) Nurse Practitioner to join our in‑patient Palliative Care team. The position calls for triaging consults and independently performing inpatient consults and follow‑ups on a two‑shift schedule (M and T, 8:00 am–6:00 pm) at NWH Main Campus (2014 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02462).

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform triage of palliative care consults and independently conduct inpatient consults and follow‑ups.
  • Assess patients’ health status, obtain histories, perform physical examinations, and diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions according to state regulations and hospital guidelines.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff, physicians, social workers, chaplains, and other disciplines to develop patient‑centered care plans that emphasize symptom control and serious illness conversations.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate treatment for palliative care patients and document recommendations, including physician consultation details.
  • Issue prescriptions and orders for tests and therapeutics as per agreed protocols with supervising physician.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality, and comply with all governance and compliance requirements.
  • Participate in the review, updating, and education around clinical practice guidelines and departmental policies.
  • Conduct periodic practice reviews and collaborate with the Medical Director or designated physicians for any practice areas not covered by written protocols.
  • Serve as a liaison between management and patients/families to facilitate optimal care and timely discharge planning.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of the special needs and behavioral aspects of patients across all age groups, with potential exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials.
  • High autonomy and functioning as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Ability to perform and interpret palliative, hospice, ICU, or oncology patient care.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Documentation proficiency and ability to adhere to clinical guidelines.
Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Master’s Degree in Nursing required.
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
    • Other certificate or diploma in Nursing required.
    • Experience in lieu of a degree is not accepted.
  • Licenses & Credentials: Nurse Practitioner (NP) / Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of MA required.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 3 years clinical experience with an occupational health emphasis (3‑5 years required).
    • Minimum 1 year management/administrative experience in a healthcare setting (1‑2 years required).
    • Optional specialty experience: 0‑1 year preferred.
  • Preferred Experience:
    • Minimum of 2 years recent experience in palliative or hospice care.
    • Previous experience in ICU or oncology preferred.
    • ACHPN certification preferred; if not, it should be obtained within 1‑2 years of employment.
