This Director is responsible for a team of Territory Managers (field‐based senior production underwriters) spread throughout the East Coast and the respective book of business within our Commercial Middle Market Construction Services organization. This is a remote/WFH role, requiring travel throughout the territory as well as conferences and leadership/team meetings – average travel is likely on a monthly basis, including overnight trips.
Strong preference for the selected individual to be located in‐market in CT, DC, DE, NJ, NY, NC, MA, MD, PA, or VA.
Leaders who can combine analytical skills, relationship building, entrepreneurial drive, and territory ownership will thrive in this role. As a Director, you will lead a team of Construction Services Territory Managers and Field Underwriters who own the sales and underwriting relationship for commercial lines products and services, building and maintaining business relationships with agencies and/or brokers to grow sales, expand distribution, and manage portfolio performance.
Key Responsibilities- Monitor market conditions and confirm information gathered within market space.
- Research risk, environment and other factors to win accounts.
- Receive input and monitor risk selection, renewal retention and pricing decisions.
- Establish research objectives and standards for the department.
- Ensure methodologies and outcomes meet business and strategic objectives.
- Analyze portfolio performance (and individual performance) to develop appropriate actions for profitable growth.
- Partner with territory managers in the large account review process.
- Direct pricing standards and practices.
- Provide recommendations to leaders about underwriting strategy and opportunities.
- Measure and manage underwriting processing and quality using company guidelines and standards.
- Determine priorities and workflow standards for the department.
- Monitor and manage performance measurements to ensure efficiency of service delivery.
- Align organizational structure to drive business results.
- Plan, develop and integrate territory sales plans to achieve top and bottom line objectives.
- Translate strategic business plans into organizational direction.
- Create financial and operational goals, budgets and timelines to meet company standards.
- Drive sales strategies to develop new business, improve retention and maintain profitability.
- Meet with agents at member locations to help with renewals and ensure agency and account needs are met.
- Consult with all levels of internal and external partners regarding policies and practices.
- Provide recommendations regarding operational practices and procedures.
- Provide input into agency strategic and business plans and regional strategic business planning.
- Communicate strategic direction and operational plans to internal associates and external partners.
- Communicate policies, procedures and financial budgets that result in business objectives.
- Ensure awareness of strategic corporate initiatives to maintain field effectiveness.
- Develop and maintain strong business relationships with key groups and individuals within the commercial line market.
- Develop effective internal and external collaborative partnerships across all customers and related functions (e.g., Loss Control, Claims, Marketing, Nationwide Technology).

- Drive customer service performance to established standards.
