Job Description

SUMMARY: Thisisaworkingsupervisor, responsible forthe operation of theFire Maintenance Facility . Thesupervisordirects the repairandmaintenance ofallfireapparatus,makes assignments to subordinates, givestechnicaladvice and assistance when needed,checksall major repairspriortoapparatus'leavingshopfacilities,andmaintainsan ongoing preventive maintenance program,The incumbent issubject to emergency callfor major accidentsor breakdown of equipment.

The incumbent receives general supervision from the Fire Chief.

• Diagnoses problems on fire apparatus in both the mechanical and fire operation of the vehivle
• Assignsworkto Fire Equipment Mechanics
• Supervises majorandminor repairs toall fire apparatus soastoensureproperoperationand advises and assists subordinatestoprovide technical guidance on more complex problems
• Determines cost effectiveness andmakes recommendationsregardingreplacement vs.repairofpartsand/or equipment and medic vehicles
• Assistsinpreparingspecificationforandinorderingfiresuppressionequipment
• Respondstoemergency situationsinvolvingequipment,to includemajoraccidents or breakdowns
• Keepsrecordsandmaintain filesonallapparatus
• Workswith Training Bureaupersonnelonacceptanceanservicetestsoffireapparatus
• Performsroadtestson vehiclesinordertoassureproperoperatinglevels
• ConformstoapplicableSOP'sand policies

• Extensiveknowledgeoftheconstruction,assembly,adjustment,andmaintenanceoffire apparatus,includingallpumpers,aerial ladders,platforms,fieldandbrushunits, tankers,andother support units.
• Extensive knowledge of the operation andrepair on internal combustion engines(gasoline and diesel),chassis parts and related parts and items such as pumps.
• Considerableknowledgeoftheoccupational hazardsandsafetyprecautionsofthetrade.
• Ability to diagnose defects of automotive equipment andto remedy defects,to include the use related technologies.
• Ability to make estimates of costs, materials, andtime;ability to keep records and evaluation reports.
• Abilitytoeffectivelysupervise,strongcommunicationskillsandgoodjudgment.
• Physicalconditionthatpermitssuchactivitiesasheavylifting,bending,twisting,reaching,kneelingsuchasretrievingandreplacingmaterials,supplies andinventoryorwhenperforming preventativemaintenanceandrepair ofvehiclesandheavyequipment;drivingandoccasionalwork under adverse temperatures and/or weather conditions.

• High School Diplomaor  GEDand2+yearsof mechanical repair andmaintenanceworkor equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must obtain
  
  ClassBCDLDriver'sLicensewithin6monthsofhire date.
• ASEMechanic
  
  Certification preferred.
• Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) preferred.

• Operates various emergency vehicles and equipment onanas-needed basis(for testing purposes).
• Operates computer,copy machine, fax machine, telephone and allshop-related equipment as needed.
• Operates volt ohmmeter, amp meter,pressure gauges, nozzle andvalve repair kits,calibrating tools for engines, brakes, micrometers and dial calipers, welders, grinders, saws, drills, torch, brazing rod, precision gauges, inspection and diagnostic equipment, tachometers, AC pump/gauges.
