Full Time History and Political Science Instructor

Sussex County Community College is seeking a highly qualified, enthusiastic and student-focused Full Time History and Political Science Instructor Faculty Instructor. This Full Time Tenure Track History and Political Science instructor position is in the Social Sciences & History Department and collaborates with both the Dean of Faculty/Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Department members. This faculty member must have a strong demonstrated background and expertise in history and political science disciplines and will contribute greatly to the College's General Education program.

Essential to the success of this position includes the following:

  • Actively works to support the Mission and Strategic Plan of Sussex County Community College.
  • Ability to develop, support, and implement the History & Political Science curricula.
  • A deep appreciation, understanding, tolerance, and commitment to free speech within an academic organization.
  • Ability to implement and execute established policies and procedures within a collegial environment.
  • Proven record of teaching, service activities and achievements.
  • Developed or adopted Open Educational Resources (OER) or low-cost course materials.
  • Embrace Campus Life initiatives that foster student involvement.
  • Keeping current in the principles, methods and current developments within the education and child development specialist academic discipline.
  • Responsible to form, maintain and engage with an advisory board for the program.
  • Embrace innovation
  • Create a dynamic teaching and learning environment that embraces innovation.
  • Teach in-person day and evening classes, as well as online/hybrid classes per CBA guidelines.
  • Ability to work with a broad spectrum of students found in a community college environment.
  • Demonstrate active promotion of student mentorship and retention, including advisement.
  • Contribute to Department administration and expansion
  • Use of instructional technologies and techniques appropriate to the courses assigned.
  • Contribute to Departmental budget development and assists in implementation.
  • Responsible for all curriculum development, including syllabi and other curriculum-related materials for their discipline, as well as responsible to comply with all assessment initiatives, including the completion of program reviews.
  • Participate in assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Ability to collaborate with department chair in the selection and ordering of all discipline course materials.
  • Provide support and oversight to subject area clubs and student organizations on campus.
  • Serve on college committees including the college governance process
  • Ability to communicate with supervisors/students/colleagues.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDU CATION /

EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in either History or Political Science with significant graduate course work of at least 18 credits in the other discipline (History or Political Science). Doctorate preferred.
  • Experience in academic instruction in a post-secondary environment

ESSENITAL

SKILLS:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the use of technology.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness utilizing an online learning management system.

The Learning Management System (LMS) that we use for is Canvas. Prior knowledge of Canvas or similar learning platform is preferred. Although not a requirement strong technical and computer proficiency is recommended.
