Job Description

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time:
    The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson, gets the class started quickly, gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • Management of Student Behavior:
    The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern routine administrative matters, verbal participation, talk during activities, movement, monitors behavior, stops inappropriate behavior promptly, and maintains dignity of the student.
  • Instructional Presentation:
    The teacher begins lessons with a review of previous materials, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, presents concepts with understandable language, provides examples, assigns tasks, asks appropriate questions, conducts at a brisk pace, and summarizes main points.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance:
    The teacher maintains clear standards, circulates during class work, checks performance, uses oral, written, and other work products, poses questions clearly and one at a time.
  • Instructional Feedback:
    Delivers feedback on correctness, provides prompt feedback on assigned work, affirms correct responses, provides sustaining feedback on incorrect or no responses.
  • Facilitating Instruction:
    The teacher has an instructional plan compatible with school and system goals, uses diagnostic information, maintains records, aligns objectives, strategies, assessment and student needs.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment:
    Treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents and community.
  • Performing Non‑Instructional Duties:
    Carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws, policies, follows professional development plan, demonstrates growth.
Additional Functions

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or a related area qualifying for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards

Physical Requirements: Must be able to use various equipment, exert negligible force, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, consistent with Light Work.

Data Conception: Ability to compare and/or judge characteristics of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including receiving instructions from superiors.

Language Ability: Ability to read correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, prepare correspondence, simple reports, instructional materials using prescribed format.

Intelligence: Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions, interpret technical instructions, handle variables.

Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record, deliver information, explain procedures, follow oral and written instructions, communicate effectively in various technical or professional languages.

Numerical Aptitude: Ability to use formulas, add, subtract, multiply, divide, use decimals and percentages, apply descriptive statistics, inference, theory.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately using office equipment.

Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle various items such as office equipment and hand tools, minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Ability to differentiate between colors and shades.
