Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.

This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of robust, cost-effective automation and process machine systems for Corning’s manufacturing plants. This role leads cross-functional project teams through concept development, detailed design, build, system integration, installation, and production startup.

We are seeking a highly detail-oriented and organized engineer with at least 5 years of mechanical design experience and strong proficiency in Solid Works/Inventor, AutoCAD, and GD&T.

• Design and support prototype and production process equipment through build, integration, and startup.
• Troubleshoot mechanical and process equipment issues and develop practical, robust solutions.
• Identify equipment design improvements, conduct proof-of-concept testing, collect and evaluate data, and implement design improvements.
• Coordinate with external machine builders, system integrators, and suppliers to deliver integrated systems on time and within budget.
• Prepare and review construction and installation drawings and ensure as-built documentation meets standards.
• Support engineering projects for equipment installation, capacity expansion, machine debug, and operations handoff.
• Track project schedules, expenditures, and progress, and report results to stakeholders.

• B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering
• 5+ years of experience in mechanical design and development of production machinery, automated systems, or process equipment
• Strong proficiency in:
  Solid Works and/or Inventor, AutoCAD, GD&T
• Experience with mechanical design practices, automation systems, robotics, material handling, and system integration
• Strong project management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
• Experience working with external machine builders and system integrators
• Knowledge of electro-mechanical systems, pneumatics, fluid power, part sensing, alignment, and machine safety standards
• Results-oriented, self-motivated, and technically curious
• Detail oriented & strong organizational skills
• Ab ility to work independently with minimal supervision in a team-based, matrixed environment
