During training:
Circa £44k OTE (Base salary: £29,504 - £34,757)
Once qualified:
Circa £51k OTE (Base salary: £34,749 - £40,939 + overtime + standby payments)

The programme takes 18 to 24 months, centred on an initial course at our training school followed by buddying with an experienced cable jointing team. You will build a portfolio of work, gain authorisations, and earn a nationally recognised qualification. By the end, you will have gained valuable on‑the‑job experience, learned new skills, and been able to build a rewarding career in the energy sector, contributing to the delivery of NET ZERO.
Role OverviewSSEN is looking for a Jointers Mate to upskill to Cable Jointer within our Southern Electric Power Distribution team. The role involves maintaining and upgrading the electricity network to ensure reliable supply and support the transition to net‑zero.
Key Responsibilities- Cable preparation for jointing and cable termination into transformers or switch gear
- Assisting experienced Cable Jointers on HV & LV networks, including jointing, cabling, and excavation work on a pre‑planned and quick‑response basis, occasionally requiring overnight stays
- Being responsible for the safety of yourself and colleagues, acting as an ambassador for a strong safety culture
- Being customer‑focused and acting as a strong ambassador for SSE Power Distribution, providing excellent customer service, including flexible response to fault conditions
- Assisting with maintenance/refurbishment and preparation of electrical equipment within substation compounds
- Thirst for knowledge and training, able to pick up new skills quickly, working within a team and adapting to changing priorities
- Strong focus on Health & Safety, adhering to our motto “if it’s not safe, we don’t do it”
- Hand skills: routinely stripping meter tails, using hand tools, and fixing meters to boards
- Demonstrated initiative and planning, ensuring proper equipment for each job, resilience to continual changes in the sector and a focus on delivering great results
- Flexible approach to work, meeting tasks to high standards while observing the highest levels of health and safety adherence
- Regular travel required; candidates must hold a current driving licence
