Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineer
Utility Innovation Group is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Power System Studies Engineer to join the Power Systems Analysis team. In this critical role, the Senior Engineer will lead electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations and analyses to support the deployment of microgrids, energy storage systems, data center power systems, and grid‑interconnection solutions for large loads and inverter‑based resources (IBRs).
The ideal candidate will leverage simulation tools such as PSCAD and Power Factory to model electrical machines, microgrids, energy storage systems, and power systems for large energy users such as data centers and electric utilities, ensuring seamless integration, reliable operation, and compliance with utility and grid code requirements.
The Senior Engineer will also support the design and integration of UIG’s Energy Storage for Resiliency (ESR) solution, Microgrid Control Systems, and Grid Sure analytics platform, enhancing energy reliability and performance for critical facilities.
This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams, contribute to innovative solutions for data center resiliency and grid optimization, and drive advancements across UIG’s growing portfolio of energy technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform EMT simulations to support the design, sizing, and control of microgrids, energy storage systems, data center power systems, and large load/grid‑interconnection scenarios.
- Develop and optimize models of electric machines, microgrids, energy storage systems, data center power systems, and IBRs.
- Analyze and design power systems for data centers, focusing on resilience, power quality, and reliability in critical environments.
- Conduct simulation studies for controls tuning and development, ensuring smooth system integration before field testing and commissioning.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to refine system designs, perform simulations, and run sensitivity analyses to support system development for both microgrids and data center applications.
- Support preliminary interconnection studies to validate system concepts and ensure compliance with grid code requirements, focusing on large loads and IBRs.
- Analyze grid code compliance for microgrids and data center power systems, ensuring that designs meet local and regional regulatory standards.
- Contribute to the deployment of cutting‑edge microgrid solutions, energy storage systems, and data center power systems—ensuring their reliability, resiliency, and optimal performance.
- Collaborate with other teams to ensure seamless coordination and integration of power system solutions; document and share technical findings effectively.
- Write power system studies reports, technical papers, and presentations to support UIG’s technical sales and marketing efforts, conveying complex technical concepts in a clear and impactful manner.
- Ensure schedules and milestone dates are met, manage tasks efficiently, and deliver high‑quality results on time.
- Communicate effectively with engineers, customers, and partners via phone, video calls, and face‑to‑face interactions, ensuring clarity and alignment on project goals and deliverables.
- Take initiative in leading modeling and simulation program‑level support efforts, driving the development and execution of comprehensive system models and simulation activities.
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Proven track record in electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis and power system studies.
- Strong experience with PSCAD and/or Power Factory.
- Experience with traditional electric machines, IBRs, and power electronics‑based systems.
- Preferred:
Familiarity with grid code compliance and interconnection standards for power systems (or desire to learn). - Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work with cross‑functional teams.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and deliver results within project timelines.
- Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills with a desire for continuous improvement.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to travel up to 10% of the year.
