Language-Enabled Research Scientist

Job Summary

Battelle's Cyber Solutions Division (CSD) is seeking an experienced mid-level Language-Enabled Research Scientist to work in our Beavercreek, OH (client site) or Columbus, OH offices. The position reports to the Division Manager of Cyber Solutions, which is responsible for ideating, developing, and deploying advanced technical solutions to solve the most challenging national security problems.

• Collaborate with linguists, data scientists, engineers, and technical subject matter experts to collect, translate, and analyze science and technology (S&T) information.
• Translate and analyze foreign language information from multiple sources to support advanced S&T data involving complex and esoteric materials.
• Provide timely insights on evolving AS&T issues to support execution of client missions.
• Develop and improve cyber and data science tools, leveraging data exploitation and open‑source techniques.
• Collect, organise, and analyse foreign language information from multiple sources, authoring reports and quick‑turn tasks.
• Apply foreign language skills to AS&T mission areas and use data science tools where appropriate.
• Support client sites and work independently while leading tasks on time and on budget.
• Provide thorough, high‑quality products that require minimal revisions.
• Manage expectations proactively and meet deadlines in a fast‑moving, agile environment.
• Maintain excellent communication and interaction with both co‑located and geographically diverse team members.

• Level II in Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) or equivalent American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) level for Arabic, Chinese, French, Korean, Persian Farsi, Russian, or Spanish.
• Experience in collecting, assembling, interpreting, translating, and analysing open‑source data from scientific publications, social media, and databases, synthesising knowledge into actionable intelligence.
• Experience assessing and reporting on technologies and scientific topics, including technology readiness levels (TRL) and critical technology elements (CTE).
• Experience with diverse media and advanced S&T data.
• BS and at least 2 years of relevant experience; MS and at least 1 year; or a PhD in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Excitement about learning new technical subject areas and curiosity about S&T missions.
• Experience in national security, defense, and/or intelligence communities.
• U.S. citizenship with an active Department of Defense Top Secret/SCI clearance.
• Travel up to 25%.

• Master's Degree in political science, data science, foreign language, international relations, or related fields.
• Five years of experience as a linguist, technical expert, intelligence analyst, or equivalent.
• Expertise in data science and in manipulating and analysing large/diverse data sets, including exploratory analysis, model fitting, and visualization.
• Experience creating, interfacing with, or optimising databases (SQL, PostgreSQL, No
  
  SQL).
• Strong coursework or experience demonstrating algorithmic programming and data visualization skills.
• Programming experience in Python, R, or similar languages.
• Experience applying supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques to real‑world problems.
• Willingness to obtain a polygraph if required for program needs.
