Position: Volunteer Clinical Supervisor (Adult, Adolescent, and Child/Family Therapy Programs)

Volunteer Clinical Supervisor (Adult, Adolescent, and Child/Family Therapy Programs)

We thank you for considering becoming a volunteer with Maple Counseling!
VOLUNTEER CLINICAL SUPERVISOR play an essential role in the professional development of our trainees.

  • Licensed for two years as an LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, or Board‑Certified Psychiatrist.
  • Maintain an active clinical license in California, in good standing with the respective licensing board.
  • Have practiced psychotherapy for at least two of the past five years, or have directly supervised trainees or associates for two of the past five years.
  • Meet continuing education requirements in clinical supervision: a one‑time 15‑hour course for first‑time supervisors, and 6 hours per license renewal cycle thereafter. Licensed psychologists and board‑certified psychiatrists are exempt.
  • Provide Maple Counseling with a curriculum vitae, copy of current license, and current professional liability insurance.
  • Make a minimum one‑year commitment to supervise one or two trainees for one hour per week via telehealth (two trainees meeting together with a supervisor for one hour is triadic supervision). Although most supervision is done virtually, in‑person supervision may be available upon request.
  • Complete a BBS Supervision Agreement form within 60 days of the commencement of supervision, and return it to the intern to send to their appropriate board.
  • Sign the trainee's hours of experience weekly log for the one hour of supervision provided.
  • Be familiar with the policies and procedures of Maple Counseling.
  • Communicate with the staff group supervisor (contacts to be initiated by the group supervisor).
  • Participate in the trainee evaluation process once a year:
    • Complete the Maple Counseling trainee evaluation form which will be sent to you.
    • Meet with the trainee to discuss the evaluation.
  • The Maple Counseling staff group supervisor is the primary supervisor and legally responsible for all cases. Any changes in a treatment plan must be presented to the primary supervisor prior to implementation. In order to work as a team, it is important to have contact between the volunteer supervisor and the staff group supervisor. Examples of problematic situations that warrant contact with the group supervisor include:
    • The trainee discusses a client who is imminently suicidal or homicidal, or presents risk of harm to self or others. In this situation, the staff group supervisor should be notified immediately.
    • Trainee is not attending supervision on a regular basis, or is habitually late for supervision.
    • Trainee does not present sufficient information to allow for effective supervision.
    • Ethical or legal questions arise regarding the trainee's behavior.
    • The volunteer supervisor disagrees with a treatment plan prescribed for a client.
