Job Summary
The Station Electrician C performs a wide range of tasks involved in the construction, maintenance, rebuild, removal, operation, testing, and inspection of energized or de‑energized generation, transmission and distribution facilities. The role includes responding to emergency callouts and coordinating prompt restoration of service to customers.
Supervision guidelines (direct, immediate and general) are provided to ensure safety and skill development.
Key Responsibilities- Work on energized equipment up to 260 volts. After six months, assist in work on conductors and equipment energized above 750 volts under supervision.
- Select proper prints and/or drawings for various work and understand each’s basic requirements.
- Use test equipment such as voltmeters, ohmmeters, ammeters, insulation megger, etc.
- Assist in disassembly, inspection, maintenance, and repair of station transformers, circuit breakers, portable substations, rotating machinery, network protectors, air ducts, heat exchangers, station batteries, nitrogen bottles and air filters.
- Assist in station work such as installing conduit, pipe, cable and wire; passing tools and materials; digging and back filling trenches; removing and spreading stone; uncrating equipment and material; installing and removing portable substation fences, barriers and safety signs; painting structures and equipment; and climbing station structures.
- Use various tapes, insulating materials, paints, and understand proper application.
- Assist in visual inspections (check lights, heaters, circuit breaker counters, oil levels, bus connections), read gauges (voltmeters, ammeters, hydrometers, pressure and level gauges), and apply start‑run‑stop tests on emergency generators, water and sump pumps and fire engine motors; report abnormal conditions.
- Replace lamps, switches, duplex outlets and dry cells; install and maintain signal and communication systems.
- Assist in oil‑testing work involving oil samples, portable and stationary oil handling equipment, and electrical tests (TTR, Doble, core megger, resistance) for transformer testing.
- Assist in station switching using radio communication or direct instruction from higher classification; check equipment clearances and perform de‑energized tests; place grounds as directed.
- Maintain records and prepare reports as required.
- Attend training and assist in training other employees as assigned.
- Use and operate company vehicles, specialized equipment, hand and power tools, portable generators, blowers, pumps and inspect and store personal protective equipment.
- Operate company vehicles, cranes, aerial lifts and specialized equipment; perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.
- Use knots relevant to station work.
- Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.
- Assist employees of equal or higher classification and direct work of assigned employees.
- Become familiar with the company’s safety rules and practice resuscitation and first aid as presented in the safety manual.
- Perform duties in accordance with the company’s safety rules, operating regulations and practices.
Minimum Requirements for a Station Electrician C
- Associate degree in electrical, mechanical or industrial maintenance technology or equivalent education and/or experience.
- Equivalent education and experience limited to military training and technical work (e.g., aviation or nuclear instrumentation technician) or recent experience (within last six months) as a Station Electrician C or equivalent with another utility or contractor.
- Minimum 24 months satisfactory work experience as a Station Electrician C or equivalent.
- Associate degree in electrical, mechanical or industrial maintenance technology or equivalent education and/or experience.
- Valid Class A CDL.
- Minimum 24 months satisfactory combined work experience as a Station Electrician B or B‑Certified or equivalent.
- Associate degree in electrical, mechanical or industrial maintenance technology or equivalent education and/or experience.
