COUNSELOR – ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Nogales Unified School District #1

Purpose Statement:

In accordance with the Santa Cruz County Healthy Student Project, the elementary counselor will assist all students develop skills in personal-social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational development. This is a grant-funded position with a grant period of three years; the expected end date is May 2018.

Project Overview:

The primary goal of the Healthy Student program is to provide all students the necessary skills to be successful academically, socially, emotionally, and in their future careers. We will realize success when:

  • Each student’s ability to learn and achieve is maximized
  • All students make successful and lasting transitions between school and the world of work
  • All students have a foundation for personal and social growth through school and into adulthood

To accomplish this we will:

  • Implement an intensive Positive Action and Stay on Track interventions for extremely at-risk youth
  • Institute a School wide Character Counts plan that addresses respect, citizenship, trustworthiness, and caring themes that targets school culture and classroom instruction
  • Establish Family/community supports that includes ongoing support groups, a strand of appropriate interventions, and community programs led by adult volunteers
  • Work with agencies, community health, and community associations to plan, pilot and fund a comprehensive family counseling program and work with law enforcement and the courts to increase public awareness and enforcement of intoxication laws

Supervision:

This job reports to the PRINCIPAL (multiple sites may be assigned and supervision will be by the site administrator/principal).

Essential Functions:

  • The school counselor establishes the school counseling program and develops activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program.
  • The school counselor involves other school staff in decision-making about the school counseling program.
  • Composes a wide variety of materials (e.g., reports, student activities, correspondence, audits) for the purpose of documenting activities and conveying information.
  • Coordinates the student’s behavioral plan to ensure it is implemented as written; coordinates with teachers, resource specialists, and community partners for information and/or recommendations.
  • Counsels students, parents, and guardians for the purpose of enhancing student success in school.
  • Coordinates counseling services for students and assists with coordination and implementation of student services in the school.
  • Develops a variety of special programs to assist students in the transition from elementary to middle school; supervises assigned programs to monitor performance and support professional growth.
  • Interprets test results and student data; assists teachers with educational placement using appropriate assessment strategies.
  • Adheres to ethical standards and laws governing the schools; participates in professional associations and maintains professional knowledge as needed.

Other Functions:

  • Monitors students’ progress to identify issues and take action to increase student success.
  • Participates in child studies/interventions to gather required information.
  • Participates in home visits to discuss/communicate information and concerns with parents.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support site administration and ensure effective functioning of the work unit.
