Job Title
Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Provide breastfeeding education and support to pregnant and post‑partum breastfeeding women to encourage breastfeeding success. This education and support will be provided as part of the Mariposa Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program to enhance existing client services.
Essential Functions- Participate in required training and certification as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.
- Provide one‑on‑one counseling to pregnant and breastfeeding women in the WIC office, at MCHC clinic sites, in client homes, and in the hospital.
- Provide group education to expectant parents at the WIC office, at MCHC clinic sites and other community locations.
- Coordinate with fellow WIC staff to maximize service delivery to clients in order to enhance breastfeeding success.
- Coordinate with other MCHC departments and programs, as well as other health care providers, to reach the most women who can benefit from breastfeeding support.
- Collect/document required information for evaluation and reporting, including use of ADHS WIC software.
- Assist with design of education and teaching materials.
- Prepare narrative progress reports.
- Participate in continuing education opportunities as required.
- Comply with all MCHC and ADHS WIC policies and procedures, including confidentiality.
- Demonstrate excellent patient/client relations skills: smile and greet patients/clients immediately; engage all patients/clients in a genuine, warm and caring manner; respond to requests for assistance from colleagues at Mariposa in a positive, helpful manner.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Ability to provide services in a professional manner and respect confidentiality.
- Ability to communicate clearly with others.
- Ability to organize effectively and meet deadlines.
- Ability to deliver health education information in an age-appropriate and literacy-appropriate manner.
- Ability to deliver group education to women.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships between special projects, community organizations, and the general public.
- Ability to work within a community health setting and follow policies and procedures set forth by the Mariposa Community Health Center.
- Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and scheduled weekends on call.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged sitting and walking, some bending, walking, stooping, and stretching.
- Normal range of hearing and eyesight.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
- High School degree or GED from a U.S. institution required.
- A working knowledge of best practices in breastfeeding (lactation) promotion and support preferred.
- 100% bilingual: ability to speak, read, and write both English and Spanish required.
- Must have a valid Arizona driver's license and clean driving record.
- Must have personal, dependable transportation to make hospital and home visits.
- Must have breastfed one or more children.
- A strong commitment to and enthusiasm for breastfeeding as the preferred infant feeding method for mother and child is required.
- Successful personal breastfeeding experience preferred.
