Under the direction of the school principal and/or assistant principal, the counselor is responsible for implementing research‑based instructional strategies that direct the learning process and promote achievement of assigned students, creating a supportive classroom culture conducive to learning. All instruction will be individualized to accommodate differences in learning style, pace, maturation level, and achievement, with adjustments based on frequent assessment.
Minimum Qualification Requirements- Bachelor’s Degree in Education required;
Master’s Degree preferred. - Candidate with Bachelor’s Degree may have up to 6 years of experience.
- Candidate with Master’s Degree may have up to 8 years of experience.
- Alaska Teacher Certificate required.
- Three years of experience in education preferred.
- Experience in Inupiaq Language, History & Culture preferred.
- Maintain competency in subject matter areas of certification and assignment.
- Employ appropriate assessment methods to identify student proficiency and plan short‑ and long‑range programs using student data.
- Build harmonious interpersonal relationships with students, parents, supervisors, administrators, staff, and community members.
- Promote and support School District Goals as defined in the Board of Education Strategic Plan.
- Participate in educational committees and organizations for personal growth and professional promotion.
- Provide instruction that is bicultural or multicultural, responding to diverse community interests and needs.
- Use Rubicon Atlas to complete requirements for culture‑based unit development per annual expectations.
- Supervise and train instructional paraprofessionals.
- Abide by the code of ethics and professional teaching standards of the Professional Teaching Practice Commission of the State.
- Write and submit weekly lesson plans to the Principal and maintain digital copies throughout the year.
- Adhere to all District policies and regulations.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Regularly sit, stand, walk, and use hands to handle tools and materials; frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; occasionally climb or balance.
Must frequently lift or move up to 40 pounds.
Requires functional vision: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception.
Environmental ConditionsMust travel within and outside of the North Slope Borough School District and be willing and able to fly in small and large commuter planes.
Work environment noise level usually moderate.
