Education Coordinator

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Education Coordinator for the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center (AMCC) located in Nome, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:

The successful applicant will oversee the programs department at Anvil Mountain Correctional Center under the supervision of our PO 3. You will engage in providing innovative educational programs within our facility. You will be working with a culturally diverse offender population and need to recognize and respond to lifestyle and value differences. This encompasses program development and design, coupled with making curriculum for offenders' education in the areas of Adult Basic Education, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), Life Skills, Vocational Education, and Post-Secondary Education.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

Your office, classroom and library are in the secure side of the facility. Security staff are available but not located inside your area as you work with both male and female offenders from minors to all ages of adults, sentenced and unsentenced.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in education, counseling, social or behavior sciences or a closely related field. AND One year of journey level paraprofessional experience in educational or vocational education programs or services. This experience is equivalent to work such as the Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant 2 or Education Program Assistant, and similar classes with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent with another employer.

An extensive background investigation will be required for successful applicants. Working with inmates requires care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk. Some positions perform activities that require bending, crouching, walking or standing for long periods of time. Some work activities involve discomfort or unpleasantness such as moderate noise levels, vibration, dust, dirt or odors associated with operation of equipment and/or tools in performance of duties.

Recruitment Difficulties

Starting salary may be approved up to Step D-$48.50, if criteria are met.
