Position: Power Plant Operator / Mechanic

Role Description

This full-time, on-site Power Plant Operator / Mechanic position is based in Nome, AK and is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of power generation equipment. The role includes monitoring and adjusting plant controls, reading gauges and meters, and responding to alarms to maintain stable and reliable power output. The Power Plant Operator / Mechanic performs routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and mechanical repairs on engines, generators, and auxiliary systems.

Daily tasks also include documenting operating conditions, completing maintenance logs, and following all safety and environmental procedures. The role works closely with other utility staff to support continuous operations, troubleshoot equipment issues, and assist with scheduled outages and system upgrades.

Qualifications
  • Knowledge of power plant operations, including monitoring controls, interpreting readings, and maintaining stable generation.
  • Mechanical aptitude for servicing engines, generators, pumps, and related equipment, including troubleshooting and basic repairs.
  • Understanding of electrical and utility systems, safety procedures, and regulatory compliance relevant to power generation.
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance, keep accurate records, and follow standard operating procedures.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and capacity to work safely in varying weather and operating conditions.
  • Effective teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with other operators, mechanics, and supervisors.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or certifications in power plant operations, industrial maintenance, or a related field preferred.
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and on‑call as needed to support continuous plant operations.
  • Physical ability to lift equipment, climb ladders, and work in industrial environments while following safety protocols.
