Position: Seasonal Park Ranger (Interpretation) (Dog Kennels)

Overview

This is a temporary, excepted service appointment not to exceed 1039 hours, with a typical season from April to October 2026. Salary ranges from $22.07 to $35.54 per hour, plus a 3% cost‑of‑living allowance. Pay is subject to annual review. The position is GS‑5 to GS‑7.

Location

Denali National Park and Preserve, Denali Park, AK. No telework, limited travel, occasional overnight travel up to one night per month. No relocation expenses.

Duties
  • Caring for, feeding, handling, and harnessing sled dogs for demonstrations to the public, three times a day during peak season.
  • Working with staff to ensure safety of dogs, employees, and visitors during interpretive programs and dog‑team runs.
  • Presenting formal and informal interpretive programs on the history and significance of the park’s dog‑mushing program, as well as on natural, cultural and wilderness resources.
  • Maintaining and repairing dog houses, sleds, harnesses, and other mushing equipment.
  • Conducting personal contacts with visitors, answering questions, and providing reference materials.
  • Assisting with general ranger duties such as search and rescue, emergency medical service, visitor assistance, and other visitor‑education and interpretation tasks.
Additional Duties for GS‑07
  • Providing on‑the‑job training and assistance to team members; observing and reporting on the use of various resources.
Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Selective Service registration for males.
  • Active driver’s license; may be required to operate a four‑wheel‑drive vehicle.
  • Uniform compliance; may work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and travel.
  • Minimum age 18 years.
  • Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park’s or preserve’s natural and/or cultural resources, gained through lived or worked experience in or near the area of consideration.
  • Ability to handle and train large, vigorous sled dogs.
  • Knowledge of dog‑mushing equipment and general tack.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to assess visitor needs and provide information.
  • Proficiency with computers, audio‑visual equipment, and standard office equipment.
