HDR's Alaska office is seeking motivated archaeological crew chiefs for the 2026 field season in Alaska (May-October). The position may require pedestrian survey and/or archaeological monitoring; however, the candidate should expect to spend the majority of his or her time conducting data recovery. This is a seasonal position based out of the HDR office in Anchorage, Alaska.

The candidate must meet the Secretary of Interior (SOI)-qualifications as an Archaeologist. The successful candidate will lead and supervise archaeological field crews in pedestrian survey and data recovery efforts. Candidates should be familiar with fieldwork planning, execution, and documentation, quality control review processes, and interpretation and processing of field data.

The successful applicant will be eligible for the ACRA Healthcare Program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Show up to work each day on-time and prepared.
  • Follow safe work practices.
  • Conduct archaeological survey and testing.
  • Dig shovel test pits and excavation units.
  • Hike over rugged terrain for 8‑10 hours a day while carrying necessary field equipment.
  • Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts.
  • Complete field forms.
  • Excavate and document archaeological excavation units and features.
  • Photograph resources.
  • Log daily activities in issued field notebook.
  • Supervise field technicians.
  • Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
  • Significant physical work is a primary part of this job. If hired, the successful applicant will be required to conduct heavy physical work, including lifting, pushing, or pulling objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which will require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, and/or loud noises.
  • Work requires hiking and working in rugged terrain.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous Alaska-based archaeological fieldwork experience.
  • Experience with GIS processing and field tools preferred.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History or closely related field
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in cultural resource projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of and experience with project compliance‑related activities including consultation, quality assurance and reviews
  • Willingness to work under varied weather conditions

    Successful candidates must be familiar with field study design and documentation, regulatory framework for cultural resource management, and GIS utilities
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee‑owned culture is a must
